Moving from one place to another can be a stressful time. There is so much that a person needs to worry about doing before that moving day comes that things can often be forgotten about. From knowing when to hire movers to changing information, there are many things to remember, but what makes the cut?
What are the most important things people need to keep in the back of their mind when it comes to moving?
Cancel or Transfer Service
Of course, some of the most important things that people need to take of before moving is calling their service companies and cancelling their contract. This means calling your water, gas, cable, electric, telephone and internet services. One thing that could make the move-in process easier would be the ability to transfer your service to your new address. This is something that cable companies often offer. If your television company offers this service, it might be in your best interest to take them up on the deal. These companies often charge setup fees at new locations and would usually waive that if you stay with them.
Forward your Mail
Another task that needs to be taken care of before moving is taking the USPS up on the free change of address service. Don’t let your important letters and bills get sent to your old address, especially if you are moving out of the state. The process is simple, as you can fill out the form electronically from your computer or ask your mailperson for the paper form. The paper form is good to get because it comes with great coupons and deals from industries ranging from security alarm companies to home improvement stores.
Change Credit Card Information
In this day and age when individuals own more than multiple credit cards, these companies all need to be informed individually. There are several ways to complete this process, including marking the box on the front of your payment form when mailing in a payment. That shows that you are changing your address on the back of the form and from then on, your bill will get forwarded. Another way to do this is to the 24-hour customer service number on the back of your card or even to log onto your account online and change it manually there.
Inform your Family, Friends, Company and Others
This is an important step. You need to let your family know you are moving or have moved. You can do this in a couple different ways with varying degree of creativity. One way is to simply email everyone in your family with your new address. Another more creative way would be to send cards that are either made online with pictures of your family or hand-written notes with your new address on it. The customized card is something that your friends and family will put on their fridge and your address will be in sight when needed.
Another organization you need to inform of the move is your place of employment or even any previous places of employment during the calendar year. This is for tax purposes. The last thing you want to have happen is to have your W-2 mailed to the wrong address and possibly lost forever.
