Starting a new business is typically challenging, especially when it comes to raising money to fulfill an important milestone. Usually startup entrepreneurs secure funds from family, friends and mostly from their own funds when they start. Angel investment is a common second round of financing for start-ups. Venture capitalists are approached for larger funds.

Most large firms usually hunt for technologies and talent to boost their offering and products and this week was no different for search giants like Yahoo and software companies like McAfee. Yahoo acquired two startups but will shut them down because it needs just the mobile talent behind those startups. McAfee is paying $389M for firewall products which is understandable because McAfee develops software security products.

These are the 13 startup funding and acquisitions we spotted this week.

1. Yahoo acquired two companies–Milewise and GoPollGo–both companies will be shut down whilst employees join Yahoo mobile team. Financial details of the two, separate transactions were not announced. GoPollGo is a real-time polling tool that lets brands and media properties collect and analyse feedback whilst MileWise is a flight rewards app.

2. NetSuite acquired OrderMotion, a developer of software used for B2B and B2C billing, ordering, and fulfillment. Financial details of the acquisition were not announced by the company.

3. Eleven-month-old startup Coinbase raised $5M in a venture capital funding round. According to WSJ it’s the largest funding round to date for a Bitcoin startup. The $5 million investment was led by Union Square Ventures.

4. HealthTap, which operates an online and mobile service which lets users ask doctors health questions, secured $24M in a Series B funding. The funding was led by Khosla Ventures.

5. San Francisco-based real estate site Trulia acquired Market LEader, a provider of customer relationship management (CRM) software for the real estate industry. Trulia said it would pay approximately $355M.

6. About.me, an online service which lets users create their own, one-page profile about themselves on the Internet acquired Wefollow, an online directory of people other users can follow from their interests.

7. YouEye, which operates a facial recognition-driven, user testing service for web designers, scored $3M in a funding round. The round came from Bobby Yzdani, Brian McClendon, and Beth McClendon.

8. Chute, a developer of software to power the photo sharing and social infrastructure for mobile app developers, raised $7M in a Series A funding round. The round was led by Foundry Group.

9. CircleUp, which operates an online, crowdsourcing site aimed at consumer companies, raised $7.5M in a Series A funding. The firm said the funding was led by Union Square Ventures.

10. Google Ventures, the venture capital arm of Google, snagged away MG Siegler from CrunchFund, naming Siegler a General Partner at the firm. According to Google Ventures, Siegler will focus on seed and early stage investments.

11. Clustrix, which develops cloud-based SQL databases, secured $16.5M in a Series C funding round. The funding came from Sequoia Capital, U.S. Venture Partners, ATA Ventures, and Don Listwin.

12. LiquidSpace, a startup which operates a marketplace for empty desks and meeting space (think “Airbnb for office space”), raised $1.3M in new, Series B funding.

13. Santa Clara-based security software developer McAfee, which is owned by Intel, acquired Stonesoft Oyj, a developer of firewall products. McAfeee said it will pay approximately $389M in cash for Stonesoft, which is based in Helskinki, Finland.

Yahoo Pays $30M for Summly (News Reading App founded by a 17-year-old Entrepreneur)

Acquisitions

NEWS

STARTUP DEALS

Yahoo

Summly

yahoo

Yahoo has acquired Summly, the mobile news reader app founded by a 17 years young British entrepreneur. Yahoo said it plans to close down the actual app and use the algorithmic summation technology that Nick D’Aloisio built with a small team of five. The price was not disclosed, but sources tell AllThingsD that Yahoo paid $30 million for Summly, mostly in cash, with 10 percent in stock.

At the age of 15, Nick D’Aloisio created the Summly app at his home in London. It started with an insight — that we live in a world of constant information and need new ways to simplify how we find the stories that are important to us, at a glance. Mobile devices are shifting our daily routines, and users have changed not only what, but how much information they consume. Yet most articles and web pages were formatted for browsing with mouse clicks. The ability to skim them on a phone or a tablet can be a real challenge — we want easier ways to identify what’s important to us.

Summly solves this by delivering snapshots of stories, giving you a simple and elegant way to find the news you want, faster than ever before. For publishers, the Summly technology provides a new approach to drive interest in stories and reach a generation of mobile users that want information on the go.

Summly originally started as a prototype app called Trimmit, which soon garnered attention and seed funding from Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-Shing’s investment firm. In no time, it had a range of other investors, receiving up to $1.5 million from Ashton Kutcher, Zynga’s Mark Pincus, Automattic’s Matt Mullenweg and Airbnb’s Brian Chesky.

Summly has nearly a million users since its December 2011 launch.

Nick and the Summly team are joining Yahoo! in the coming weeks but the young Nick D’Aloisio has signed on for only 18 months.

Last week Yahoo purchased of Jybe, a social recommendation company.

Dropbox Acquires a Month old Mailbox iPhone App

Acquisitions

Consumer

STARTUP DEALS

STARTUPS

Dropbox

email

iPhone

Mailbox

productivity

Productivity apps

Mailbox, the most hyped email productivity iPhone app recorded 1.3 million reservations before launch last month. The app lets you quickly swipe messages to your archive or trash. You can scan an entire conversation at once with chat-like organization. Snooze emails until later with the tap of a button.

Mailbox will still run as a separate, standalone application. In a blog post, the Mailbox team stated ” Since launching last month, our service capacity has grown 2000x and we’re already delivering more than 60 million emails a day. That’s mind-bending growth for only a few weeks, and we’re just getting started.

Dropbox CEO Drew Houston told the WSJ that his company felt it “could help Mailbox reach a much different audience much faster.” Houston told the WSJ that Dropbox will use Mailbox’s tech to improve its own features, including handling email attachments.

Drew and Arash said in a blog post:

After spending time with Gentry, Scott, and the team, it became clear that their calling was the same as ours at Dropbox—to solve life’s hidden problems and reimagine the things we do every day. We all quickly realized that together we could save millions of people a lot of pain.

Dropbox doesn’t replace your folders or your hard drive: it makes them better. The same is true with Mailbox. It doesn’t replace your email: it makes it better. Whether it’s your Dropbox or your Mailbox, we want to find ways to simplify your life.

“Whether it’s your Dropbox or your Mailbox, we want to find ways to simplify your life.” Drew said.

Under the deal, the 13 employees of Mailbox owner Orchestra Inc.–including alums of Apple, Stanford University and Ideo–will join Dropbox. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed but the price of the deal is rumored to be around $100 million in cash and stock.

[Funding Roundup] These 9 Startups Raised Over $80 Million This Week

Funding

STARTUP DEALS

Business

STARTUPS

Starting a new business is typically demanding, especially raising the necessary amount of startup capital to get your dreams off the ground and running. There is always money out there, but you have to know where and how to find it. You also need a sense of the strings that come with each flavor of startup funds. The following 10 technology companies scored over $154 million in funding this week.

# San Francisco-based Plivo, a developer of telephony APIs, raised $1.75M in a seed funding round. The round came from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Qualcomm Incorporated and SV Angel.

# TrueLens, a developer of social data and marketing analysis tools, secured $1.2M in a funding round. The funding round was led by Google Ventures, and also included Charles River Ventures, Common Angels, 500 Startups and Boston Seed.

# Green Throttle Games raised $6M in a Series A funding. The firm said the round was led by Trinity Ventures, and also included DCM. Companies or ideas with the most potential are selected for the next stage of the process. Usually business plans are screened to identify the right idea, product or service that best suits the investor’s line of investment. The selected few are taking through due diligence, where statements made in business plans, presentations and financial projections are verified. After a successful completion of due diligence, a term sheet that defines the structure of the investment deal-type of equity and board of directors will be presented to the successful startup or startups.
