Zoopy has started focusing on creating its own content, mainly geared for playback on mobile phones. Zoopy CEO Jason Elk says the decision to turn away from offering a YouTube-type service took months to make. “People are really settled into their video upload service of choice, and that is YouTube,” he says.

Zoopy’s plan is to provide video snippets of events, news and other content relevant in the African context. “We will be able to do this without any restrictions,” says Elk.

Zoopy was launched in 2007 and was selected by Nokia as their Regional Imaging Partner for South Africa in the same year. In June 2008, Zoopy received investment from Vodacom, South Africa’s leading cellular network.

Spotify Brings Free Access To Music On Facebook

Spotify will be deeply integrated into Facebook, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced at the f8 developer conference today. As part of its larger entertainment initiative, Facebook will launch a music dashboard, which will display music-specific notifications and updates, and also show which songs are currently popular within one’s network of friends.

The service will be free, but Spotify hopes that this new level exposure to Facebook’s enormous user base will help drive paid subscriptions.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek in a blog post to announce the integration said: We’re very excited to have been asked by Mark Zuckerberg to showcase this new experience at the f8 conference in San Francisco today. You’ll now start seeing new music posts and play buttons all over your newsfeeds. Hit a play button and the music starts. Right there. Spotify fires up to give you a new soundtrack to your social life. Check out your new Music Dashboard and your real-time ticker to discover the music that’s trending with your friends.

He further stated that: This integration with Facebook will help everyone to discover more free music than ever before. Thanks to our unrivalled, truly free service, users can just hit play to enjoy the music, no hassle, no gimmicks; month after month after month.

Hulu Launches Its Online TV Service In Japan

Today, Hulu officially launched a new subscription service in Japan, a move that marks the first international expansion for the company. Starting at launch and in the weeks following, Hulu’s service will offer entertainment fans in Japan unlimited instant access to hundreds of premium feature films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Armageddon, Men in Black, Troy, and As Good As It Gets and more; and thousands of episodes from previous seasons of TV shows including 24, Bones, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, Fringe, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, Heroes, LOST, NCIS, Private Practice, Prison Break and Ugly Betty and more.

Subscribers will be able to instantly access these shows and movies on demand on a wide variety of internet connected devices including connected TVs, PCs, tablets and smartphones, without advertising, for ¥1,480 per month.

“Since launching Hulu in 2008 in the U.S., we have been working hard to bring our service to consumers outside our home market and become a global brand. Today, we are taking a first, but important step to make good on our aspiration to serve customers all over the world,” said Johannes Larcher, SVP of International for Hulu.

With the launch of Hulu in Japan, subscribers will be able to instantly watch thousands of U.S. TV episodes and hundreds of feature films on internet connected living room devices including TVs, Blu-ray players, and gaming and entertainment consoles, as well as PCs, tablets, and smartphones.

Groupon and Live Nation Launch New Online Ticketing Deals Marketplace

Groupon and Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. today announced that they have a formed a joint venture to develop a new online ticketing deals channel, GrouponLive.

GrouponLive will serve as a local resource for Live Nation events and clients of its global ticketing business, Ticketmaster. The site will be a groundbreaking resource for consumers to find high-value tickets to concerts, sports, theater, arts and other live events, while serving as a timely and effective way for merchants to sell more tickets. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Launch is planned in time for the summer concert season.

Users of GrouponLive will have access to limited-time deals on a variety of events across North America. The site will update offers as new events become available.

Web TV has come to stay. Internet TV is an industry with great potential.
