Justin.tv Launches TwitchTV, A Video Gaming Broadcast Network

Justin.tv today launched TwitchTV, a competitive video gaming broadcast network in the world. TwitchTV is dedicated to supporting, entertaining and inspiring the e-sports community. Leveraging the live video streaming infrastructure pioneered by the team at Justin.tv.

TwitchTV features the highest quality competitions on all games and platforms, with the top gamers, the biggest tournaments, and the best commentary. TwitchTV leverages the live video streaming platform and infrastructure pioneered by Justin.tv.

TwitchTV currently generates 3.2 million unique visits per month, 4.5 hours of video viewed per person per month, and more than 45 million total video views per month. TwitchTV is launching at this year’s E3, the world’s largest video game expo.

The new site is also partnering with GameSpot to stream over 90 hours of E3 content from the show floor, including all major press conferences.

“This is just the start of what we want to build,” said Emmett Shear, co-founder and CTO of Justin.tv, and general manager of TwitchTV. “We designed this site to support the e-sports community. Since everyone on the team is a gamer, it’s a site made by e-sports fans, for e-sports fans.”

Youtube Has Begun LIVE Broadcasting

In the wake of the recent investment of $100 million for original content on YouTube by Google. YouTube is set to broadcast more live content to you with their new YouTube Live service.

YouTube has begun live streaming of a number of popular concerts, sporting events, and interviews, but primarily on a one-off basis. A statement published on Youtube’s blog, said that:

Today we’re announcing the initial roll out of YouTube Live, which will integrate live streaming capabilities and discovery tools directly into the YouTube platform for the first time. This begins with a new YouTube Live browse page, where you can always find the most compelling live events happening on YouTube and add events to your calendar. Subscribe to your favorite YouTube live-streaming partners to be notified of upcoming live streams on your customized homepage.

The statement further said that:
“Today, we’ll also start gradually rolling out our live streaming beta platform, which will allow certain YouTube partners with accounts in good standing to stream live content on YouTube. The goal is to provide thousands of partners with the capability to live stream from their channels in the months ahead”

Cisco To Acquire Video-Streaming Startup Inlet For $95 Million

Cisco Systems has announced plans to acquire privately held Inlet Technologies, a provider of adaptive-bit-rate video processing platforms, for $95 million. The acquisition is aimed at supporting Cisco’s videoscape Initiative.

Inlet’s video-encoding technology adapts the quality of a video stream based on real-time network conditions as well as the capabilities of the target device.

According to Cisco, the startup will strengthen the capabilities of the Videoscape TV platform, by letting service and content providers deliver video to any device over any IP-based network.

“Cisco’s Videoscape platform will play a key role in reinventing the TV experience, and the acquisition of Inlet will enable our customers to leverage the network as a platform to deliver innovative video experiences to consumers on any device,” said Enrique Rodriguez, senior vice president and general manager of Cisco’s Service Provider Video Technology Group.

Online TV is like cable, only with a much bigger selection of programs at your fingertips. It is tipped to be the next big thing with innovators signing deals with content providers. Entertainment and technology companies are exploring new online services that would offer film and TV content for the huge online market. Netflix has been a dorminant force in this industry with its streaming service. In 2011 venture capital firms will support unique startups with brilliant and innovative models that can rival netflix.

Amazon.com is already developing a Netflix-type subscription service for TV shows and movies. OnLive, a startup that offers video games over the Web, in which Warner Bros. is an investor, plans to offer movies via subscriptions and other offers. Microsoft and Sony Corp. have also talked to media giants about licensing services TV shows for subscription offers through their video game consoles. TV maker Vizio has also expressed an interest in getting content for a video subscription service. These are among other stories on how film and TV will take center stage next year. Joost is a peer-to-peer based and is developed by the team that invented Skype and Kazaa. Joost requires the download and installation of Windows software and the registration of user details.

Miro promote themselves as an open-source alternative to Joost. Miro is a Windows application but there is no registration of your details. Miro boasts 2,500 channels of non-DRM content, with HD available.

Babelgum is similar to Joost. Babelgum is peer-to-peer based and requires the installation of Windows client software.

Veoh has similarities with Joost and Babelgum. Veoh market themselves as supplying video ranging from home video to internet TV content. Veoh is also a Windows download and requires registration.

Online Video Startup Ideas You Should Explore In 2010

Online video sites like Youtube, vimeo, and ustream have features that make them unique. Web TV has come to stay,but there are a lot of other features that online video lover and users would love to see in any of the video services listed above. I believe that a lot of other startups will spring up that will provide something different from what we are used to online.

In the coming years some companies or startups will or may provide the following services as a technology for other startups or even build a product them. If you know of a startup that provides these features or services, do not hesitate to share it.

Zoom effect in a Playing video .The ability to pause a video and zoom it to have a vivid picture of a background image or personality.This could be a feature that can be added to any of the video services already being provided. Google’s Real time images of maps of streets and various regions and even the new biking routes is the beginning of new technologies we are yet to experience. There is just so ,much that can be explored in a playing video, be it a recorded video or real time video being streamed. The details of a streaming video is what I am looking for.

Activating a 3D effect in a streaming Video. Avatar (the movie) brought a new dimension to the theatres. A 3D version of the movie made it even better on screen. A lot of people preferred that, and I must confess it was good to watch. What I want to see and I hope somebody is either doing it or will be done soon is a feature in a streaming video that makes it possible to view it in 3D without a special tool. The movie or clip should not necessarily be shot in 3D. People would love to see how their videos will turn out in 3D and you will get lots of traffic and exposure. Watch out for Youtube, Google could provide such a feature for video lovers.

Branding Videos Companies are finding different ways to make their presence felt online.Some companies make their own videos and distribute them on various video sites to promote themselves. My question is : Is it possible to provide a service that makes possible for companies to find all videos uploaded by others that features the company in the video. Companies can the compete to place ads in popular videos and provide incentives or commissions for those who uploaded them. Users can then earn some money with every view or click. If the video its a hit, the owner can charge monthly fees.

Automatic Language Translator for Videos on Demand . Most videos or movies recording in different languages makes it difficult for users to watch them without subtitles. As video streaming gets popular . I would love to see features like automatic language translators for videos without necessarily uploading a different language versions for it. Subtitles help, but sometimes its a distraction especially if you want to concentrate on the content of the material. Real time videos being streamed form different parts of the world in say a technology or startup conference will be easier to follow.

Web TV has come to stay. Internet TV is an industry with great potential. A time is coming and has now arrived when a lot of internet users will be used to the internet so much that they would prefer to watch their TV on the go. Many internet consumers are already enjoying internet in countries with high internet bandwidth.Countries like Japan and the US have enjoyed internet TV for some time now. But I believe that internet TV is yet to hit mainstream. Sites like Youtube, Vimeo and Ustream have won the hearts of many already,even though they provide just video streaming services. Startups that offer real time TV or breaking news as it happens will go on to capture large traffic.

Web TV service in a niche industry will still make it if the content is right. 2010 will see a lot of disruptions and internet TV will not be left out. The target should be web TV on smart phones.
