Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and Obama’s former director of online organizing has launched a new startup. His startup, Jumo — a philanthropic endeavor that works to match people with political movements, nonprofit organizations and other causes — formally launched today. (Jumo means “together in concert” in Yoruba, a West African language.
The site is organized, like a social network. Profiles for individual users contain a collection of information that they have shared and used, pages for organizations created, and issue pages that serve as a kind of discussion area.
Hughes says that the idea is to make sure that Jumo can get the most relevant information possible so its users can build relationships with social organizations.
The company is currently a mere eight people–and the team comes from a mix of technology, non-profit, and media worlds. (The funders are equally diverse. Jumo has raised $3.5 million dollars so far.
