As part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week Ghana celebrations, Startup Weekend will hit Accra this weekend. Registration is still open for the second Accra Startup Weekend scheduled for 16th to 18th November 2012, at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), East Legon, Accra.
If you missed Accra Startup Weekend last year, then it’s time to unleash your big idea and take a stab at creating a viable business that can compete on a global scale. Last year Dropifi walked away with the grand prize after a weekend of idea generation, modifications and presentation before a panel of judges. Dropifi provides a replacement for ‘contact us’ buttons with a spam free widget which also allows companies to better analyze, visualize and respond to incoming messages from customers and prospects.
Dropifi successfully raised investor funds from the Meltwater Incubator, won the App of the year in the TopApps Award 2012 in Ghana, and has recently won the Global startup Open competition. The company has also been mentioned on several lists of most promising startups in the world. David Osei, the CEO and co-founder of Dropifi will be at this year’s event to talk about their success story.
Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.
Beginning with open mic pitches on Friday, attendees bring their best ideas and inspire others to join their team. Over Saturday and Sunday teams focus on customer development, validating their ideas, practicing LEAN Startup Methodologies and building a minimal viable product. On Sunday evening teams demo their prototypes and receive valuable feedback from a panel of experts. Over 36% of Startup Weekend startups are still going strong after 3 months. Roughly 80% of participants plan on continuing working with their team or startup after the weekend.
The winner of #SWAccra will receive a prize package (details coming soon) and will also qualify to go on to compete in the second annual Global Startup Battle, the world’s largest startup competition!
From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.
