5 Essential Tips for Women Leaders

Women are constantly redefining their roles in today’s world. With the challenges faced, women are striving to excel in an environment that has not adapted as quickly to change. Women are becoming a driving force in many fields. According to Forbes there are five essential tips for women looking to become leaders.

Be set up for success. Look for opportunities that offer room to move up. The women who rise to positions of leadership don’t simply look at the present, but look towards the future. They take positions that can lead to better positions. By putting themselves in a place where doors can be opened to go further, and they are prepared to step through it.

“Women, like men, should try to do the impossible. And when they fail, their failure should be a challenge to others.”–  Amelia Earhart

Don’t be afraid to ask for it. It has been proven that women are less likely to ask for raises, negotiate higher contracts, or ask for bigger and better assignments. In the past women were taught that it was not proper for a woman to be pushy. In today world, a woman needs to be assertive to succeed.

“A woman is like a tea bag – you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”– Eleanor Roosevelt

Persistence pays off. Another throw-back to days of the past was that it was rude to be a pest. It was considered unladylike to bother people. While it is still not always good to be pushy, being persistent in going after goals can often achieve the desired results. Not giving up after the first “no” can be the difference between success and failure.

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness.”– Oprah Winfrey

Having courage in the face of fears. There are many intelligent women who have the knowledge and skills to become leaders. However, they let their fears hold them back. Courage isn’t a lack fear. Courage is being afraid but moving through it, instead of letting it hold them back. By moving towards their fears and working through them instead of hiding from them is a giant step towards becoming a successful leader.

“Success is more a function of consistent common sense than it is of genius.”– An Wang

Consistency is better than perfection. Many women are held back by a desire to make everything perfect. Perfection is an unattainable goal. No one is perfect. However, consistently achieving good results is within reach. Women who make excellent leaders let go of their mistakes instead of allowing them to undermine their confidence. Setting reasonable goals and consistently reaching those goals is often something women struggle with. While women are very often accepting of other people’s work, even when it is not perfect, they hold themselves to a much stricter grading scale. It takes practice, but women can learn to accept results and move forward.

“Women like myself, CEOs, can pave the way for more women to get to the top.”– Andrea Jung

The leadership roles available to women will continue to expand and grow as more women step forward into higher positions. Earning an Organizational Leadership degree will provide you with the skills to handle those positions will ensure their success in those roles.  Future leadership roles will open up to women who are willing to reach out and take them.
