Chillax, a smart app that discovers the best hangouts in your city won the Accra Startup Weekend over the past weekend. Unni Krishnan (Senior faculty at MEST), Ethel Cofie (Business Solutions Manager at Vodafone) and Vivek Goyal (Principal Consultant at ThoughtWorks Africa) voted Chillax as the best app out of the 11 teams that presented at the 2013 Accra Startup Weekend.
Chillax is a smartphone app that provides tailor made hangout recommendation by matching your personal preferences to places in your current location. Chillaxapp studies user behaviors and recommends hangouts based on your interests.
To find places that fit your interests, the app crawls the internet and listens in on active conversations of places to hangout and events happening in your city. Anytime you check in on Chillax, it matches you to the perfect places in your location based on what it knows about you.
The 5 member team, three of whom are entrepreneurs-in-training at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology won $6,000.00 worth of Google App Engine Credits, $1,200.00 worth of Advertisement from Adsbrook, 1 year free training from Thoughtworks on Agile Programming and a fully sponsored trip to Moscow next year in MArch for the Global Entrepreneurship Week.
The team has also qualified to participate in the global startup battle which comes with a $20,000 cash prize and a trip to Google HQ.
According to Kingsley Abrokwah (team lead/co-founder), the product will be expanded to Lagos and Nairobi after a successful launch in Accra.
Second place winners, Optics4Africa and Fabrique also impressed the judges with their apps.
Optics4Africa seeks to aggregate business data into a simple and intuitive manner for investors, market analysts interested in trends in Africa to help them make informed decisions.
Fabrique also aims to be the number one on-line shop for authentic African fabric.
