When to Use Protective Wear at Work

Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE for short, is an essential consideration within a range of projects. This kind of equipment is important for workers and employers, as it can prevent serious problems down the line.

Why is PPE Important?

PPE covers a lot of different equipment which can be used in a variety of situations. These can protect the lungs, skin, eyes and more. With hazardous materials or particles, breathing them in or contact with the skin can have the potential to create massive health issues.

For liability and for employee well-being, there must be an assessment to decide where this equipment is appropriate to be used. This should be handled by an experienced person with knowledge of the right regulations. They should take into account every potentially hazardous element of the job and then provide the PPE to mitigate this.

Selecting the Right PPE for the job

Conducting a risk assessment on the project will help you decide which PPE is appropriate for the task. Take into account any materials that could be inhaled, any that shouldn’t come into contact with the skin as well as any eyewear that could be necessary.

Don’t be tempted to go for cheap or poor quality PPE, as this won’t be up to the task. You can find quality PPE from many companies, such as TRIMACO®, who have been trusted providers of safety equipment since 1906 – their website offers the option to ask questions about a product before you decide to buy, and so is useful when ensuring you get the right product. It’s very important to look for quality assurances before you purchase.

If you buy PPE and start using it, take time to assess whether it’s right for the job. Reviewing the requirements after the fact but before taking on a new job will allow you to improve as time goes on.

Improving on PPE requirements

Talking to those working on a site is a great way to figure out whether the PPE provided is adequate. They will be able to tell you if they felt that the PPE was not correct or if there were other requirements that were not attended to. For example, those working on site may be glad to have eyewear but could also have used breathing PPE for the same dusty environment.

These requirements can easily be missed when preparing for a project, especially if you’re not anticipating a certain hazard. The important thing to remember is that going forward, you should always aim to evaluate and improve.

PPE can only work well where it is properly administered. Make sure that everyone on the site is using this PPE, regardless of how long they will be working on the site. This is the bane of the industry, as some people don’t want to use PPE when they’ll only be working on a short task. These tasks can extend to be much longer though, so require that everyone uses the same PPE regardless.

As you work within the industry, you should pay attention to changes to the safety required. This will keep you ahead of the game and ensure that your workers are safe and secure at all times.
