Nearly every day, we hear news that a major retailer, bank, or healthcare system was hacked, infected by malware and users were held ransom, or that an elderly pensioner fell victim to an online phishing scam. If you think the internet is a dangerous place to do business, be entertained, shop, or communicate, then you are right to a certain extent. But antivirus and mobile security from Lookout may be just what you need to solve some of these problems. Thankfully, we have simple advice which may also be useful.
Online security is not as difficult as you think
1. Use a complex password. This means you should immediately change any default passwords supplied with your mobile device, home or office PC, or networking software. If possible, use a password manager. Create a password that is eight or more characters long and uses a mix of upper and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters. Passwords should not include information that can easily identify you by name or other personal details.
2. Implement two- or multi-factor authentication wherever possible. This means utilizing more than one piece of information to verify your identity when logging into a website or application.
3. When using public Wi-Fi, use VPN software to create a secure internet connection and make sure your device’s firewall is enabled.
4. Be wary of social engineering threats, such as when you get a call from an unknown person who attempts to trick you into revealing personal information.
5. Online purchases and financial transactions should only be made through secure sites, usually with a URL proceeded by https and with a padlock icon in the location bar.
6. Pay attention to email threats. Most email programs such as Outlook and Gmail give users the ability to preview an email without ever opening it. This is an ideal way of checking for links which may not be secure or suspicious. The bottom line: Do not open an email from someone you do not know or were not expecting to receive.
