Most of the time companies are able to recruit the people that they need to be able to thrive from their local population. But, every now and again that is not possible. Sometimes sufficient people with the relevant qualifications and experience are not available. When that happens, firms find themselves suddenly having to handle recruiting from abroad. Below we briefly explain how to go about doing this.
Advertise your job
The first step is posting your job ad. This part of the process is not that different. You just need to put together the ad and post it using agencies that recruit internationally.
Vet the applicants
Once you receive an application, start by carrying out a basic background check. You can do this online. Whitepages is an example of background search sites you can use to find out more about potential recruits. The service that they offer is free to use. Their website is the ideal place to find out more about applicants from America.
Other providers cover most other countries. You may need to use translation software to use these. In some cases, one of your existing employees will be able to assist you.
Interviewing your candidates
It is best to carry out the interview process via a video link. The approach is a little different from that you would take for a face to face interview. But, if you have not done it before, it is best to practice the process with your colleagues. You need to be confident of the tech and try out your questions and tests.
Check their qualifications
You will need to make sure that they hold the relevant qualifications. It can be tricky to work out how close they are to the ones students can gain in your own country. You will need to go online to do this.
It may also be necessary to have the qualifications registered and recognized by your home country’s authorities. If this is the case, you will need to be 100% sure that you understand which qualifications your recruits need to hold.
Other channels you can try
If you still cannot find the right candidate, try tapping into your network. Tell your employees, vendors and suppliers that you are looking for new staff. Explain what you are looking for and ask them if they know anyone suitable who would like to apply. You can do this using both online and offline methods of communication.
Understand the rules and regulations
Before you start your recruitment process, you need to understand whether there are any restrictions on who you can recruit from abroad. Many countries use a quota and/or a points system. They only allow firms to recruit for certain types of work.
You need to be sure that you fully understand the rules so that you can comply and employ people legally. Failure to do so could result in prosecution. Most governments provide the information you need to know on their websites. If you are located in the USA, the Department of Labor website is a good starting point.
