Being an excellent boss is something that generally comes with years of practice. It means that you’re cool-headed, personable and that you’re good at managing people. Although it can seem like a lot to balance, it is very possible to make some small changes to become an excellent boss and manager at your business. Here are a few tips…

Provide training opportunities

Firstly, you need to provide opportunities for your employees to progress. Although you will get people at every organisation who are perfectly happy to come into work, do their job, and go home again, without feeling any ambition, there will be others who are hungry to climb the ladder, to learn more, and to do better. Don’t feel threatened by them – instead, provide them with opportunities to extend their skills and to take on more responsibilities.

There are a lot of training courses that you can send people on so that they can learn how to use new programs and learn new things about the industry you’re in, so take advantage of that, allow your ambitious employees to learn and to progress, and then make use of their newly learned skills in the office.

Stay positive

There are few things around the office that are more boring and draining than someone who is constantly negative, and as a boss one of your jobs is to improve the morale of the office. Make sure that you don’t take any bad moods into work, and especially that you don’t take them out on anyone. If you do so by accident, have the humility to explain and apologise before moving on. Lead by example by greeting everyone in the morning and thanking them for their hard work in the evenings.

Remember to give feedback

In order to help people develop, you need to give them feedback so they can learn what they’re doing well and what they need to improve on. Although dropping a few words of praise into everyday conversation is easy, you need to think carefully about how you let employees know that they need to do better. The best way to do this is to turn it into a teaching moment – a ‘This is how you could do better’ instead of ‘This is what you did wrong’. 

What about employee benefits?

Although you can win a lot of popularity in the office by giving praise and feedback to the people you work with – and as stated already, it’s a crucial thing to do – you also need to make sure that you back this praise up with material benefits. After all, praise from your boss is great, but it won’t pay the mortgage.

It doesn’t have to be a raise – although raises and bonuses are an excellent way to ensure that employees who are an asset to the company will continue to work with you – as there is a huge range of employee benefits out there that you can implement, from discounts at various brands to organising car pools to extremely simple things like end of the month pizza parties at lunch.

Being a great boss doesn’t have to be complicated – these tips should help you improve the atmosphere in your office in no time.
