Construction has always been a top revenue-generating industry worldwide, especially in the United States. The United States claims the fame for having the largest construction industry. Though the size and scope of the industry are large, it is always changing and generating new material based on the economic and social climate generated from government and private businesses. We are experiencing a recession construction boom and the industry remains complex.

Throughout the construction sector, there is sustainable growth, especially in the private development of single-family homes, home improvement projects and business improvement projects. The workplace is also changing with women and minorities rising in representation. Also, new technologies and beginning to take foot and changing the way projects are assessed and completed. The industry, though powerful, faces a hefty amount of challenges. There is still a labour shortage for skilled workers and the ups and downs of the economy. Though there are areas of unease, most contractors and firms are confident they can meet the needs of tomorrow.

Finding a trusted firm, company or individual can be a difficult task and big mistakes are made. A mistake that can often be made is hiring the lowest bidder. This may look attractive to save money, but it is important to imagine choosing the cheapest surgeon to do major surgery. It is possible to get what one pays for, but it’s important to go for a realistic bid along with research.

Written Contract

Another mistake is not getting a written contract. While some may disagree with this, a written contract that is dated and signed by both parties is essential to protect the business, maintain a payment schedule, general plans and make sure everything is being completed on time or close to it.

Insurance

It is important to talk about insurance. Construction is a liability. The chances of something breaking or being damaged is high. It is best to ask if liability insurance is carried while working throughout the project.

Guarantee

Guarantees are incredibly important in any market. Construction is no different. A large mistake would be not having one. Experts advise consumers to make sure there is a warranty in writing. A two-year guarantee is the best option though many will only offer one year. It is important to state was is covered in the warranty because many times, the important things are not.

The biggest mistake made is not checking references. Someone is being hired to do a job which means references should be checked. Construction can improve or damage a business. It is acceptable and encouraged to talk to previous clients about their experiences. This can save a lot of time and money in the long run. Speaking with previous clients and doing the research can also help avoid headaches one might have otherwise.

When choosing a construction company, it can be a difficult process. There are many companies to choose from. In 2017, construction accounted for seven percent of the total U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By understanding what mistakes are often made by a businessperson, one can understand what to look for when hiring a company to restore, repair, replace or renovate a business.
