The global pandemic has turned countless lives upside down. For many, this has been a devastating few months. Some others are coming out of it relatively unscathed, but there are millions of people that will have a much different future now.
There is a silver lining in this situation, however. When you lose your job and it looks like there is no chance of it coming back, you have an opportunity to reinvent yourself. If there is something that you had been wanting to do for years, then this is the time to dive in and do it.
Easier said than done, that is a given. But, there is no better time to take a chance than when you have nothing to lose.
In this article, I will give you some ideas on how you can go about creating a new career out of nothing.
1 – Get some experience
Depending on what it is that you want to do when you recreate yourself, you may be able to get paid to learn the ins and outs of it. The gig economy is full of jobs that will have you gain experience that can help you get a foothold on a new career or start a business.
For instance, you can start freelancing on Upwork doing something you have always wanted to do like writing, or you can use your expertise that you already have. Say, you were a bookkeeper. Now, you can offer to do some freelance bookkeeping to have some money coming in while you look for your dream job.
2 – Become an expert
Were you a chef in a restaurant that has closed? Instead of looking for work in another restaurant, use your food service experience to build a business.
You can teach what you know. For instance, maybe you start a business as a consultant for others that are planning to open their own restaurant. Get your name out there as an expert in that field and then you will have clients come to you.
You’ll want to become an influencer by having a solid social media presence, plus a Youtube channel and even a podcast that explains the ins and outs of how the business works. To get the word out faster, use a site like Collabstr to reach out to influencers and do a collaboration.
3 – Get educated
Online education is so prevalent these days that you can learn just about anything that you want from the comfort of your own home. If you have always wanted to go back to university and get a degree, then you can do just that.
Or, you can expand on the education you already have to try to pivot to the Tech field, as for example. It all depends on what you want to do. In many cases, you can get a completely new tech sales career without a degree but by studying through an online course.
The most obvious thing to do is to learn programming and get certified in a particular coding language. Once you have that then you can find a new job that may also be remote so you don’t have to worry about job hunting during Covid-19.
