4 High-Risk Industries With Workplace Safety Concerns

What comes to your mind when you think about dangerous jobs? Maybe the image of a firefighter racing into a burning building or an electrical power line installer climbing utility poles.

Those jobs are notorious for their inherent risks. But are firefighting and electrical the only industries that pose significant risks for employees? No. There are several other industries where workers are required to navigate hazardous environments. But sadly, they don’t make the news.

Here, we’ll explore some industries where workers face real hazards every day.

#1 Construction

It’s probably no surprise that construction sits atop the list. The industry is filled with skilled professionals who build everything from homes to skyscrapers. But the construction of these structures doesn’t come without risks.

Falls, machinery accidents, and being struck by objects are some of the top hazards workers face.

In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identifies falls as one of the leading causes of fatalities in this sector.

Workers are also at risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders due to lifting heavy loads manually. Lexology informs that about 40,000 people in the UK construction industry develop a musculoskeletal disorder every year.

Proper safety protocols, such as using fall protection systems like guardrails, harnesses, and safety nets, can mitigate the risks. Training workers on machinery handling and proper lifting techniques can further reduce accidents and musculoskeletal disorders.

#2 Mining

Mining is another industry where danger seems to be part of the job description.

Workers often find themselves deep underground, in cramped, dimly-lit spaces, surrounded by heavy equipment and potentially unstable materials.

Miners constantly face life-threatening situations, from cave-ins to exposure to toxic chemicals like silica dust and methane gas. Long-term exposure to the dust and gasses commonly found in mines can lead to chronic health problems like lung disease.

Plus, the emotional toll of working in these environments weighs heavy on workers’ minds.

#3 Arboriculture

How difficult would it be to trim branches? Not much, right? Turns out, arboriculture is an inherently dangerous profession.

The USA TODAY ranks tree trimmers and pruners at the top among the deadliest jobs. Tree care professionals often find themselves high in the air, sometimes in poor weather conditions, using chainsaws or other heavy equipment to trim or remove trees.

Falls aside, common causes of injuries include falling tree limbs, equipment involving saws, working around power lines, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Having proper personal protective equipment (PPE), such as helmets, harnesses, and safety goggles, can reduce the likelihood of accidents in arboriculture.

This year, in June, a man in Alpharetta, Georgia, died while trying to take down a tree. Christie Bryant of the Georgia Association of Arborists believes her friend, Manuel Moran, died in an accident that was preventable. Only if the company had been careful to safely equip and train its workers, Moran wouldn’t have died.

In such cases, the employees’ families are eligible for compensation. Fall accidents, Atlanta Personal Injury Law Group explains, can lead to serious injuries, including scrapes and cuts, bruising, and damage to internal organs or systems.

Had something similar happened with one of your workers and they suffered from serious injuries, they could file a personal injury lawsuit.

An Alpharetta personal injury attorney can help them pursue a suit against you. If that happens, god forbid, expect to spend $100,000 to settle the personal injury case. That will drain your finances.

To be on the safe side, make sure to equip your workers with PPE.

#4 Fishing

Have you ever watched the TV show Deadliest Catch? Then you have a pretty good idea of why fishing is considered one of the most hazardous professions.

Commercial fishing is not just about casting a net and waiting for a catch. It’s a job that involves battling rough seas, operating heavy machinery, and handling unpredictable marine life.

Fishermen face unpredictable, often brutal weather and freezing temperatures while out at sea. That is not all. Slippery decks, fatigue from long hours, and the sheer physicality of hauling in massive nets or traps make this job risky.

And there’s no such thing as taking it easy when you’re out at sea. Fishing requires constant attention and quick reflexes because one misstep can mean falling overboard or, worse, being crushed by equipment.

A new study estimates that 100,000 fishing-related deaths occur annually. Thus, the CDC is right when it says it’s one of the most dangerous jobs in the U.S.

It’s clear that some jobs come with challenges that extend far beyond the daily grind.

Employees in these fields put their safety on the line to keep our world running smoothly. Their vital contributions are often recognized, but what about their safety? They deserve not just your admiration, but also your commitment to ensuring they can perform their jobs safely.

At the end of the day, every worker deserves a safe environment. The more you understand these risks, the better you will be equipped to support those who face them head-on every day.
