Unpacking The Basics of Search Engine Optimisation

The digital space is a constantly changing and evolving place. Little more than twenty years ago Google had only just been founded, while not much before that the mobile phone was springing to prominence. Facebook and social media were relatively new as recently as 2007 – now the platform is regarded as old news and passé by youngsters who thing Snapchat and Tik-Tok are the new answers for everything.

It is hard to know if Facebook is headed the same way as Blackberry or Betamax, but what is certain is that in the digital world change is inevitable and you will have to keep on learning if you want to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and tactics. In that regard search engine optimisation is a key area to understand – and here are a few tips to help you navigate the space.

What is it?

Search engine optimisation is commonly referred to by the acronym SEO. It is the way the developers and web owners portray and construct their site to make it appear appealing to the search engine spiders that crawl the internet every time a search request is submitted. There are millions of websites globally all vying for as much traffic as possible. And having your site recommended by a platform like Google is a great way to get traffic. It needs to tick a lot of boxes in order to be ranked on the front page of a Google search, and that is what optimising for search is all about.

Can you do it yourself?

The answer to this question is ‘yes’, but the caveat is that it won’t be easy. Rather go to Google and type in a phrase like SEO services in Melbourne to see what results are returned. The field of search engine optimisation is big, and it is constantly changing due to the fact that the search algorithms never stay the same for long. So, finding a partner who specialises in the field will make your job a whole lot easier as they can focus on what they know and do well and you can focus on your own area of expertise.

Keep it fresh

For any website to attract the interest of search engines it needs to ensure that it keeps itself updated regularly. Content needs to be fresh and original and changed on a regular basis. You might say that the search engines are looking for signs of life. They certainly don’t want to recommend a site to their users that is to all intents and purposes dormant.

Metadata

Search engine spiders crawl the internet reading and analysing data from all the searchable sites that are out there. But there are ways to make their task easier and that is done in the backend of the site where things metadata and content tagging make it a whole lot easier for Google to work out what is happening. In short, you want to build your site in such a way that you can help the search engines to help you generate the traffic that you need.
