Whether you have been picking up the occasional copywriting gig and you are ready to step things up or you are a total newbie and looking to carve out a new career for yourself, finding your way in the ever-competitive digital marketing industry can be difficult.
In this article, we’re going to share 5 handy tips to help you find your feet…
Let’s jump straight into it!
1. Establish yourself on LinkedIn
If you haven’t already it is definitely worth establishing yourself on LinkedIn. As a freelance copywriter this social media platform will be your bread and butter.
There are millions and millions of active professionals using this website on a daily basis and if you position yourself well, you should have no trouble picking up new clients.
We’re paraphrasing here as there is much more to LinkedIn mastery than can be covered in a single point, but here’s the gist of it:
- Post daily if possible; share your unique insights and experiences.
- Comment and follow the top copywriters and add value to their comments section.
- Engage in conversation daily with as many professionals as possible.
- Slip into DMs and get to know other professionals.
If you commit to being active on LinkedIn and provide genuine value, you’ll have no trouble finding your tribe.
2. Find your niche
While many copywriters prefer to keep their options open, if you are struggling to find your audience it may be worth niching down.
Is there a specific subject or industry you are passionate about?
If so, dial in and make that your niche! This will make it much easier to define your audience and craft the perfect messaging to attract them.
3. Create a killer offer
Once you’ve picked a niche (if applicable to you), it’s now time to create a killer offer. You need to come up with a unique value proposition that differentiates you from all the competition out there.
What will people gain from hiring you to handle their copywriting tasks?
What sets you apart from everyone else?
Craft a clear and concise offer, add it to your LinkedIn profile (treat it as a landing page) and personal website – then keep engaging daily.
4. Keep AI at arm’s length
It seems that AI isn’t going anywhere so it is definitely worth keeping it at arm’s length and familiarising yourself with it.
I personally don’t like using it. It slows me down. However, you may find it incredibly useful, especially if you are new to the copywriting game and wish to take on as many gigs as you can handle.
Learn how to use it – but keep your craft tight as well. If you stop practising your copywriting, AI will replace you. However, if you learn how to use AI, while writing every day, you’ll be the one behind the driver’s seat when the time comes.
5. Never stop learning
And finally, you should never stop learning. Read books, take courses, follow high-value content creators, and always challenge yourself to be better.
Take the negative criticism on the chin and learn from your mistakes.
If you commit yourself to the mastery of your craft and open yourself up to new knowledge on a daily basis, you’ll be far more successful than if you otherwise assume that you are perfect as you are.
You’re not.
Final thoughts
While this article was largely focused on freelancing as a copywriter, don’t forget that there’s plenty of opportunity to find writing work all over the world.
For example, if you want to write for an agency that offers SEO services in New York City, you’ll find no shortage of quality employers. However, in order to make yourself stand out from the crowd, you’re going to need a world-class portfolio.
Now get to work!
Oh, and best of luck.
